EW!DC Partner Schools Raise Reading Scores

By EW!DC / Published: 09/27/2016

Recently, DCPS released the results of the PARCC tests that were given to 3-8th grade students during the 2016 school year. Students were tested on English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Results from the 2016 tests showed a slight improvement in scores for both ELA and math across the district.

There were some particular bright spots for four of Everybody Wins! DC’s (EW!DC) partner schools who all raised the number of students either meeting or exceeding expectations on their reading (ELA) test scores by at least 2 percentage points:

·         Marie Reed Elementary School +17%

·         Amidon-Bowen Elementary School +7%

·         Garrison Elementary School +2%

·         Thomson Elementary School +2%

EW!DC would like to congratulate the students, teachers, and administrators at Marie Reed, Amidon-Bowen, Garrison, and Thomson for this wonderful accomplishment! We also want to say a big THANK YOU to all of our Reading Mentors who make a commitment to read each week with a child at those schools. Creating a nurturing and supportive environment for reading is crucial to on-going progress and success!

EW!DC is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting children's literacy and a love of learning through shared reading experiences with caring individuals in 39 low-income public elementary schools throughout the DC and the Washington Metropolitan Area.  The mission of EW!DC is to pair students with Reading Mentors to instill a love of reading and learning and foster a sense of self-esteem. The ideas behind our mission remain simple and straightforward, yet can bring about profound change in the lives of young students: expose children to literature, give them a positive role model, inspire them to read, and you will make a difference in their lives.

"It's mostly fun to read and watch her become such a confident reader and learn to love reading as much as I do. She is one of my best friends."
"When an adult helps a child, it tells that child how special they are. We send a message to the child- you are important to me- that is powerful and undeniable."
"It's a fantastic program, and I think the mentors get as much, if not more, than the student. You meet wonderful kids and have lots of fun."
